So wish I had the day off... it is so nice out. And I got all my laundry/housework/etc done up last night. Company is coming today to spend the next three days. :) Going home today when I get off, stop at Sonic for a watermellon slushy, adding some rum, and baking. Got cake to make for the company, going to make a pasta sause, and try my hand at biscuits again.

Like I said- wish I had the day off, can't wait to get out of here.

Good weekend. Rested some, cooked some, helped with Mom on Sunday. Moved her bedroom set around to try and make it more user friendly as far as us trying to handle her in the bed.

Watched a few movies to end the weekend.

This holiday weekend I am taking one day, dragging Cat off to take photos with me. Birdy too if she would get up at 7:00 am. *thinking not tho.. :D*

And I have company coming in to stay the 2 or 3 days with. Mother of a family friend, she is a friend too. But her daughter comes down and helps with Mom, gives sisters a break. But running out of beds at the house so she is staying in my guest room.

Speaking of- need to stripe that bed, wash the sheets, and clean up all the stuff. I really really really need to set aside a weekend to clean out the closet, get rid of some dress hats, and make room for my photo stuff.

It really needs done so I can get that last room painted and finished with the 'remodel'.

Going to have to bite that bullet and do it.

But not this weekend- photos trips this weekend. :D Been too long since I have done any.

Speaking of- put in my two photo is the local art show. Will go out Tuesday night and see how they did, see the other photos in the show. *cross fingers*

Just talked to a woman that my Dad moved twice while her hubby was in the military. Back in the 70's. Dad moved her from here to the one posting, then years later she got him again when they moved back. She said he moved them the first time to TX, and the last time she came out of Nebraska. And she couldn't believe she got him the second time. But he remember her, said he was taking her home as he went back himself for a visit. And how he missed his kids and wife while he was away.

Knowing Dad he aways kept in good terms with his dispatcher and when a job came up close to home he knew my father would take it, use it as a time to rest and take care of the 'local' business trucks/ maintance/ and time with his family.

Meaning two or three days visits, maybe twice a month.

She just keep going on and on and how when her granddaughter decided to leave her abusive hubby she knew who to call and told her "Don't worry- I know who to call and get you out of there. Good family folks."

She asked if Dad was still alive, sorry to hear he had passed.

Of course I am crying my eyes out.

But that is good. I don't ever want to not to, you know?

Song I have been listening to for a few days, fits the mood.

What a day. Started it with a desire to say "Fuck you." And ended with the bad need to say "Fuck you dickhead."

*sigh*

And it was two different people.

Now- cold shower, a muscle relaxer, and soft bed with a book to read.

My week has been good, sort of busy at work some. That is a great change, a very welcome change. Just got a two day office move done that Birdy recommend us for, no damage and I think they was pleased. Seemed to of been at least.

Means a lot when a friend puts her neck out to help you get a job, so I kind of stressed a little over it. One of the guys had to have a few hours off today, on the last day of the move, that wasn't planned. But the other two step up, stayed with it, and we got it done on time. And all of them worked really hard on the first day as that was when we learned we was going to be a man short.

Went to the graveyard this week, got family flowers out. Will I ever not get creep out about sitting in front of our family grave stones? Nothing like looking down at whitle marble on a black stand, with your name on it... waiting for the date of your death. Long visit with Dad, enjoyed the sun and air on top of the hill the graveyard sit.

Photo show is coming up, and have to find some mats for them this weekend. Going to the local flea market to see if the lady who use to be there is still there. She ran a frame/ mat shop and I have gotten several things framed by her. But not of late- just hope she is still there.

If not- trip out of town to find them.

Family plans a early dinner for Mother's Day. Want to take some photos of her too. I took some at Easter but not many.

Also got a baby shower to stop by on Saturday before going to Cat's for the day.

Seems like a busy weekend ahead, with a sink full of dishes, junk at the kitchen table, shoes, socks, and thinks thrown here and there... in other words- busy week.

But I did get the time tonight to make blueberry muffins for the family, and for me next week as we have some busy days. :) Mmmm... I love homemade muffins, and since I have not helped much at Mom's this week with care, housework, or cooking- sure they will love them in the morning when I hit the flea market at 9:00am.

But all in all- good week in my little world. Hope it was the same for you, dear reader.

Chocolate Pecan Pie in honor of the Kentucky Derby is made. :) And while I was at it- did a Chocolate Silk Pie since my brother doesn't like nuts.

Going to keep half of that one. :) The other pie is good, had a slice for dinner.

Got plans to make cook some whole chickens for Sunday. Rosemary/ lemon and a plain one for my brother.

Yeap- he is my plain eater, not into anything different. But hey, he has ate more then I ever would believe of late. He even ate .."shock look".. cream cheese, just didn't know it. ;)

Other things on my list-

See Cat and her family, maybe work on a wreath I am making of pearls for my bathroom.

Clean, do laundry, wash some new clothing I got in today.

From a online web newsletter that deals with our industry. Putting is here so when I have the "So, how do we pay the bills this month?" stress I will know I am not the ony one in the same boat.

Then again- I turned down a move just yesterday. Why? Military job, a code 4 *Meaning it was going overseas* You have to either pack or paper wrap all the items, place into wooden crates, seal, mark, and have them ready to ship out.

And sorry but... it just isn't worth wear and tear, supplies, using my packing up that I have in stock so I don't have to turn around and replace it with higher cost packing, labor cost, fuel

And refused one for storage as the company had a outstanding debt to me for over $5,300.00. While half was paid soon after, they will not be allowed into my warehouse till it is all paid. Even then.. most likely not. If you will not pay your bills- you just ain't going to pay them.

Once you get a history of that crap, I don't want to have anything to do with you.

Anyway-

It tears your heart out. How much in pain and suffering can the agents and drivers endure from SDDC and DPS and the MMC?

Mr. Summer:

I have been reading your articles about the current state of the military moving industry with great interest as someone is finally giving voice to the problems facing the small moving company. Your comments are exactly what I have been telling my wife and family for the past few years but I have done nothing personally to resolve the situation. I own two small moving companies in Kentucky serving the Fort Knox installation but recently made the decision to close both companies.

Our family business has been operating continually for 62 years and I have been working and owning the two companies for over 44 years. This was not an easy decision to make as I could have continued to funnel money back into the business but with the current rate structure for DPS and fees charged back by the Move Management companies, I could not justify taking money from local work and subsidizing the military work. Needless to say, I feel that the military is losing a company that provided years of experience and expertise that cannot be provided by a MMC sending in drivers to pack and pickup shipments with labor off the street.

While I have plenty of opinions concerning DPS and its impact on the small mover market, most of them have been voiced by you over the last few weeks. There is one area that I feel needs to be addressed and that is lack of oversight by the military of TSP finances and TSP's not making timely payments or in some cases not paying for services done by the agents. We, as the service providers, then have no recourse but to plead with TSP to pay, but really have no way recovered these fees due us. Suing is normally too expensive and due to interstate complications not feasible, so we just have to eat these charges along with the low rate that originated with the shipment.

At some point in time, there will have to be a review of this system as small companies will not be able to sustain themselves, as there will nothing to reinvest in your company: no money to buy/repair trucks, make capital improvements to warehouses, or invest in labor pool. While the moving business has always been a competitive market, rates as low as now being filed cannot be sustained. Every other cost is going up. Packing material has gone up over 18% in last two years with no offsetting rate increase. And yet the TSP keeps tacking on different fees to offset their costs and the small service provider has to accept this or the TSP will just move to another company that will do the job. Whether the TSPs or Big Van Lines were either tacit or complicit in the implementation of the DSP, it is the small companies, like myself, that bear the brunt of the work and cost of doing the job at cut rate prices. Over time, the erosion of small companies like mine will impact this system and hopefully those few companies remaining will benefit.

Please continue to make these issues known and maybe some good will result. Best Wishes.
